What the best designed websites have in common

The best designed websites are not the most decorated ones. They share a short list of traits: a single clear message at the top, fast loading, confident typography, real images, simple navigation and an obvious next step. You can check any site, including your own, against these nine points.

1. One message above the fold

Good websites say what the business does and for whom in one sentence, visible without scrolling. If a visitor needs to read three paragraphs to understand the offer, the design has failed before it started.

2. Speed

Great design websites feel instant. Pages are light, images are compressed and nothing blocks the first view. Speed is a design decision: every animation, font and video is weighed against the delay it adds.

3. Typography that carries the page

Look closely at well-designed sites and you will notice how much is done with type alone. Two typefaces at most, a clear size scale, generous line spacing and lines short enough to read comfortably.

4. A restrained colour palette

One or two brand colours, a neutral background and a single accent for buttons. When everything is highlighted, nothing is.

5. Real photographs

Photos of the actual product, place and people build trust. Stock images of handshakes and headsets do the opposite, and visitors recognise them at once.

6. Navigation that needs no thought

Five to seven menu items with plain names: Services, Pricing, About, Contact. Visitors should never wonder where a link leads.

7. Space

White space is not wasted space. It separates ideas, guides the eye and makes a page feel calm. Crowded pages look cheap whatever the budget.

8. Consistency

Buttons look like buttons everywhere. Headings follow one pattern. Cards share the same padding. Consistency is what makes a site feel professional even when the reader cannot say why.

9. A clear next step

Every page ends with an action: call, message, book, buy. The best sites make that step visible, repeat it at sensible points and remove anything that distracts from it.

Where to look for good web design

  • Award galleries such as Awwwards, CSS Design Awards and the FWA show ambitious work, useful for ideas on layout and motion.
  • Curated collections such as Siteinspire, Land-book and Godly group sites by style and type.
  • Design communities such as Behance and Dribbble show concepts, though many are not live sites.
  • Your own industry. Study the three competitors whose sites you would trust as a customer, and note why.

Award sites are often built to impress designers. For a business, borrow their clarity and polish, not their weight.

A five-minute test for your own website

  1. Open it on your phone on mobile data. Count the seconds until you can read it.
  2. Show the top of the page to someone for five seconds. Ask what the company does.
  3. Find your phone number. How many taps?
  4. Read one paragraph. Is the text large enough?
  5. Look for one thing you could remove.

Good design and search rankings

The same traits that please visitors help search engines: fast pages, clear headings, descriptive links and content that answers the question. Design and SEO are done together in our website development work, and every site we build is responsive.
